Ways to Build Self Esteem

Do you suffer from low self esteem? Do you find yourself feeling inadequate in some situations? You're not alone; low self-esteem (or low self-image) is a common problem.

The good news, however, is that it's reversible. That's to say, with time and practice, you can build your self-esteem and become confident in yourself and skills.

Before we get started, it is important to remember that you, and only you, can help raise your self-esteem. Do not wait for others to help you raise your self-esteem. The process and need to get started on raising your self-esteem must start within.

Here are several ways to start building your self-esteem now:

1. Think Positive. Those with low self-esteem usually tend to have a negative thought process. Do you think negative all the time? Start thinking positive and throw out all that negative thinking.

2. Hang Around Positive People. There's nothing worse on your self-esteem than hanging around downers. Surround yourself with positive people and you will begin to notice a change in your attitude.

3. Stop Talking Negatively to Yourself About Yourself. Low self-esteem causes you to continue to berate or denigrate yourself in your mind. You have to make a conscious effort to stop that negative cycle of mental abuse.

4. Don't Judge Yourself. When you make a mistake, do you find that you are extremely harsh on yourself? Stop doing this! Everyone makes mistakes. Instead of beating yourself over the head, apply a generous amount of self-love.

5. Practice Smiling. Do you find it difficult to smile? Make yourself smile, even when you don't feel like it. It will make you feel a lot better!

6. Smile at Yourself. If you have low self-esteem, then you probably find it extremely difficult to look at yourself in a mirror. Practice looking at yourself and smiling at yourself in a mirror every day. While you're smiling at yourself in the mirror, say something nice about yourself.

7. Use Positive Affirmations. One of the easiest ways to give yourself a self-esteem booster shot is to use positive affirmations. They are essential to changing your thought process. Practice positive thinking through positive affirmations daily. Write five positive affirmations on sticky notes and stick them in places where you'll see them often throughout the day.

8. Acknowledge Yourself. When someone compliments you on a job well-done, do you shrug them and their compliments off? Next time, smile and say, "Thank you!" See what a difference it makes when you can truly accept a nice compliment and acknowledge yourself for a job well-done.

9. Tell Your Inner Voice to SHUT UP. Do you have a nagging inner voice that snaps at you all day long? Why not just tell it to shut up?! The next time you hear that negative inner voice, literally say aloud, "Shut Up!" and see what happens.

10. Give Something to Someone for Free. One of the easiest ways to make yourself feel better is to do something nice for someone else. There's no nicer feeling than to know that you just made someone's day.

11. Help Someone Else Who Has Low Self-Esteem. In addition to giving freely of yourself to others, you can greatly boost your own self-esteem by helping someone else who has low self-esteem.

12. Say NO. One of the most exhilarating feelings, when you're building your self-esteem, is to say NO. This can be difficult to do at first, but keep trying and you'll soon get the hang of it.

13. Don't Pass On Your Low Self-Esteem to Someone You Love. If you're not careful, you will inadvertently pass on those traits to your loved ones through your words and actions. Remember to be kind to yourself and to others.

14. Do Something You Want To Do. If you've been denying yourself something special because you don't think you're worth it, go right now and do it, or get it, for yourself. You do deserve it! You are worth it!

15. Be Nice to Yourself. One of the best ways to combat poor self-esteem is to simply be nice to yourself. Make time to do something special, just for you.

16. Practice Makes Perfect. This is a day-by-day process. Low self-esteem can't be changed overnight. Remember to take it one step at a time.
